Individuals residing in Japan on Student or Dependent visas are not permitted to work full-time. However, they may work part-time, provided they obtain prior approval from the Regional Immigration Services Bureau for activities outside the scope of their current residence status.
There are two types of permission available: comprehensive permission and individual permission. The required permission type depends on whether the individual intends to work more than 28 hours per week. For further details, please refer to the Immigration Services Agency website.
If an individual wishes to work full-time, they must apply to change their visa to one of the appropriate work-related visas.
It is important to note that foreign nationals in Japan holding Student or Dependent visas must either apply for permission to engage in activities outside the scope of their current visa or apply to change their visa status if they wish to work part-time or full-time. Working without the necessary permission is prohibited.
