Divorce and Visa Status in Japan

If a foreign national living in Japan with a “Dependent,” “Spouse or Child of Japanese National,” or “Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident” visa (status of residence) divorces their spouse, they must submit a “Notification of Relationship with Spouse” to the .Regional Immigration Services Bureau.

In the above circumstances, the foreign national will no longer qualify for the type of visa they currently own, so if they wish to remain in Japan after divorcing their Japanese or permanent resident spouse, they must update their visa.
