Divorce and Visa Status in Japan

Foreign nationals living in Japan under a “Dependent,” “Spouse or Child of Japanese National,” or “Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident” visa (status of residence) must submit a “Notification of Relationship with Spouse” to the Regional Immigration Services Bureau if they divorce their spouse.

Since their current visa will no longer be valid under these circumstances, they must apply for a different visa if they wish to continue residing in Japan after divorcing their Japanese or permanent resident spouse.
